Beware Of Unaccredited Nursing Schools & Programmes

Latest Posts

Every year, thousands of passionate and hopeful individuals dream of becoming nurses — a noble and life-changing profession. Unfortunately, this dream is being threatened by unscrupulous institutions preying on unsuspecting students. As Unique Health is dedicated to supporting the development of qualified and ethical nurses, we feel it is our responsibility to raise awareness about a growing concern in nursing education.

Don’t Be Fooled - Accreditation Matters

Many aspiring nurses are being lured into paying large sums of money to institutions that claim to offer nursing education, but are not accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Enrolling in these programmes puts your future at serious risk.

If a programme or institution is not accredited by the SANC:

  • You will not be registered as a nurse with the SANC.
  • Your education and training will not be recognised, regardless of how much time or money you’ve invested.

How to Protect Yourself

Before making any payments or enrolling, always verify the accreditation status of the institution with the SANC.

You can find the official and up-to-date list of accredited institutions on the SANC website at www.sanc.co.za. This list includes:

  • Names of accredited institutions
  • Specific programmes they are approved to offer
  • The number of students allowed per intake

SANC updates this list as new institutions are accredited, so it’s your best and most reliable source of information.

Watch Out for “Pre-Nursing” Scams

Some institutions may try to lure you in with so-called “pre-nursing” programmes, claiming they are required before you can enrol in a nursing qualification. This is a scam. These programmes were phased out by the end of 2023 and are not recognised by the SANC.

The Only Recognised Nursing Programmes

As of now, the South African Nursing Council officially recognises only the following nursing qualifications:

  • Higher Certificate in Nursing – 1 year
  • Diploma in Nursing – 3 years
  • Bachelor of Nursing – 4 years (offered at universities)

Admission Requirements

Entry into any of these programmes depends on your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. You must meet the minimum academic requirements, which differ for Higher Certificate, Diploma, and Bachelor’s Degree studies, as per the national higher education guidelines.

Final Word: Verify Before You Commit

As you take the first steps toward your career in nursing, be cautious and well-informed. The excitement of chasing your dream should never lead you into the trap of bogus institutions.

Always double-check with the SANC. Protect your passion, your time, and your future — and remember, becoming a nurse starts with making the right choices today.

Stay informed. Stay safe. Stay on the path to a recognised nursing qualification.
