International Nurses Day 2025

Latest Posts

Today, on the 12th of May, we join the global community in celebrating International Nurses Day – a day dedicated to recognising the tireless efforts, compassion, and commitment of nurses who are the backbone of healthcare systems around the world.

This date holds a special place in the history of nursing, as it marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneering nurse whose legacy continues to shape the profession.

At Unique Health, we salute every nurse who wears their uniform with pride and purpose. From bustling city hospitals in Johannesburg to rural clinics in Limpopo, your resilience and dedication do not go unnoticed.

A Legacy of Compassion and Courage

Florence Nightingale, known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” revolutionised nursing in the 19th century by introducing hygiene practices, statistical healthcare analysis, and patient-centred care. It is in her honour that International Nurses Day is observed annually. Her legacy is a powerful reminder of the difference one dedicated nurse can make in the lives of many.

Today, South African nurses continue that legacy by serving with heart, healing in challenging conditions, and advocating for their patients’ wellbeing with bravery and grace. Whether you are on the front lines in trauma wards or providing essential community health outreach, your work transforms lives.

Reaffirming Our Commitment: The Nurse's Pledge

As we celebrate, it is also a time to reflect on the core values that unite nurses across provinces, borders, and generations. The Nurse’s Pledge remains a beacon of integrity, humanity, and service. We invite all nurses to read and recommit to this solemn promise:

  • I solemnly pledge myself to the service of humanity and will endeavour to practise my profession with conscience and with dignity.
  • I will maintain, by all the means in my power, the honour and noble tradition of my profession.
  • The total health of my patients will be my first consideration.
  • I will hold in confidence all personal matters coming to my knowledge.
  • I will not permit consideration of religion, nationality, race or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient.
  • I will maintain the utmost respect for human life.

I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honour.

Thank You, Nurses of South Africa

To every nurse we have the privilege of working with – thank you. You give more than just your clinical skills; you give your time, your energy, your empathy, and your heart. We see you. We celebrate you. And we stand beside you in championing better working conditions, ongoing professional development, and the recognition you so deeply deserve.

Let’s continue to uplift one another, to lead with compassion, and to heal with strength. Happy International Nurses Day!
