SANCA Drug Awareness Week 2025

Latest Posts

Addiction can quietly take hold of individuals from all walks of life - it doesn't discriminate by age, background, or profession. Unique Health believe that awareness and acknowledging there is a problem is the first step toward healing, and we would like to add our support to the SANCA Drug Awareness Week initiative. Whether you're concerned about yourself, a colleague, a friend, or a loved one, understanding how addiction works and what signs to look out for can make all the difference.

How Addiction Works

Addiction is a complex condition, often rooted in a combination of physical, psychological, and emotional factors. It changes the way the brain functions. What may start as occasional use of a substance – whether for relief, escape, or recreation – can quickly become a dependency that affects daily decision-making, relationships, and overall health. Addiction isn’t about a lack of willpower; it’s a medical condition that requires understanding, support, appropriate intervention and care.

What to Look Out For

Signs of substance addiction can vary, but common red flags include sudden changes in behaviour, neglect of responsibilities, decline in personal hygiene, mood swings, secrecy, and physical changes such as weight loss or fatigue. You might also notice a decline in performance at work or school, financial problems, or withdrawal from social activities. If someone is using more of a substance over time or is unable to stop despite negative consequences, it is time to seek help.

Starting the Road to Recovery

The path to recovery begins with acknowledgment and support – both personal and professional. Start by having an open, non-judgmental conversation. Encourage the person to seek medical advice or connect with a support group. Recovery isn’t instant; it’s a journey that often includes counselling, medical assistance, lifestyle changes, and a strong support system. If any additional support is required during the rehabilitation process.
